After a successful 15-year ski racing career, he did avalanche control at Bridger Bowl Ski Area in Montana, earned a Masters Degree in Geology from Montana State University, studying under the well-known avalanche scientists Dr. John Montagne and Dr. Bob Brown. He then took over as the Director of Avalanche Control at Big Sky Ski Area in Montana and worked as a backcountry avalanche forecaster for the Alaska Avalanche Center. Bruce has been featured in a number of national and international television documentaries about avalanches including those produced by National Geographic, Discovery Channel and PBS as well as appearing on a number of national network news programs. New Product of the Year

Polartec Alpha

wma-polartecSoldiers simply can’t afford to shed or add layers while on the go. The U.S. Special Forces require active insulation that works during both the resting and dynamic phases in the field. Together we developed an advanced breathable insulation technology that dries quickly, retains warmth, and circulates airflow. Polartec® Alpha® performed so well that it is now standard issue for the U.S. Special Forces. This invention alone spurred an entirely new insulation category available to the demanding and innovative apparel markets. Look for the Polartec® label to be certain that you have the most advanced technology available.

Safety Product of the Year

Backcountry Access Float 32

wma-floatSkiing in the backcountry comes with the inherent risk of exposure to avalanche terrain. Should you find yourself caught in a slide, the BCA Float 32 Airbag Backpack is a tool that offers a drastically increased chance of survival. Pull a trigger on the shoulder strap, and a highly durable airbag quickly inflates behind your head, decreasing your odds of burial in avalanche debris by increasing your overall buoyancy. Even with this technology, the Float Backpack still offers all the storage you need for your shovel, probe, goggles, and other gear—here’s to the evolution of safety beyond the rope.

Company of the Year

Protect Our Winters POW

wma-logo-pow

Protect Our Winters (POW) was started in 2007 by pro snowboarder Jeremy Jones who witnessed first-hand the impact of climate change on our mountains. After having been turned away from areas that had once been ride-able and seeing resorts closed due to lack of snow, Jeremy saw a gap between the winter sports community and the action being taken by us all to address the problem. We represent the global snow sports community – there are 21 million of us in the US alone. Clearly, it’s time for us all to step up and take responsibility to save a season that fuels our passions but is also the foundation for our livelihoods, our jobs and the economic vitality of our mountain regions. POW was founded on the idea that the collective power of the winter sports community is massive, and if we can all work together, the end result can be revolutionary. Together We Can Protect Our Winters.

Congratulations from everyone here at Avalaunch to this year’s Winter Market Awards winners. Here’s to more snow, more safety and more winter culture to share among us all.
