Conrad Anker Delivers Avalanche Wisdom And Ethics At Outdoor Retailer

Avalaunch ambassador, alpinist and North Face athlete Conrad Anker spoke today concerning avalanche safety in the Winter Sport zone at Outdoor Retailer in Salt Lake City, UT. With over 35 years of climbing, skiing and general mountain domination experience behind him, Anker exudes calm and consideration that can only be earned through a lifetime of challenging himself with the incredible environment he calls home. After studying snow science at the University of Utah and travelling the world in pursuit of steep peaks, his outlook and demeanor are those of a confident and relaxed veteran in a life-long affair with the alpine world.

Anker’s experiences place him perfectly in the position of Avalaunch ambassador. His love of alpinism and ability to conquer challenges while maintaining a positive outlook are crucial to his educational endeavors. The tendency for skiers and climbers to be kind, sharing and supportive in the backcountry (for the most part) is part of his motivation for the adventures themselves. These ethics of backcountry access are a large part of his adventures and theories concerning avalanches; overcoming challenges with partners and navigating avalanche terrain on multiple continents are crucial to bit-by-bit accumulation of experience and education leading to safe practice.

Having seen and felt the repercussions of avalanche terrain on a global and personal scale, Anker thoroughly understands the need for education and outreach to grow with the number of enthusiasts. He knows that overconfidence in avalanche gear, overstepping abilities or succumbing to the many small and large factors concerned in a backcountry situation all contribute to the probability for disaster. By understanding human reactions, interactions and practices he hopes to improve the knowledge available to a new generation of backcountry enthusiasts.
