David Dalla G Set To Rock 2013

David Dalla G Set To Rock 2013

Bozeman rapper, Montana State graduate and all around driven fellow David Dalla Gasperina is on the verge of piercing the veil of his next progression. Born and raised in Portland Oregon, Dave has always been loud, talkative and driven. Raising hell and all sorts of din in this manner has brought him to where he stands today: on the precipice of his next grand adventure and the progression of his unique voice further into the growing swath of socially conscious hip-hop.

When his older brother brought home Coolio’s ”Gangster’s Paradise” in grade school, Dave’s lifelong affair with hip-hop began. After copying and memorizing Coolio’s style he devoured Ice Cube, Dr. Dre and fell in with Tupac’s rhyming catalogue, an influence he still cites today. Arriving at MSU in 2008, Dave pursued and attained in 2012, a bachelor’s in filmmaking while managing to put out two releases over the last two years: “This One’s On Me.” and “Davidology.” in 2012. Between these two releases, Dave met and paired with DJ Surebert at a Dub Sultan show in Big Sky. The two have been performing and producing together since, developing a stag presence and collaborative spirit infusing their next project “The Show.” Releasing in the next month to be promoted across the Big Moves tour this spring.

The Big Moves tour is Dave and Surebert’s first serious, collaborative tour. Heading West to Seattle and as far East as Chicago. Collaboration on this scale is a turning point in the duo’s career, after blending additional collaborative elements into their act over the past two years including a live band and recordings with Bozeman hip-hop dynamo Mic-B, Luckyiam from the living legends and Megan Hamilton from the flourishing Minnesota hip-hop scene. The end of the Northwest leg will be another Rail Jam performance for Dave and Surebert as well as the debut of Megan Hamilton on the Rail Jam stage.

Progression to this level is an impressive step from 2011, when the duo performed the Chamberlin Showcase, winning positions at Beerfest, the Avalaunch Pray for Snow Party and opening for Atmosphere at 2012’s Chamberlin Rail Jam. Along every step of every event, solo or festival, the format has changed, incorporating new skills, beats and elements lending a unique and varied experience.

Offstage Dave also pursues this growing mentality in his implementation; blending Hamilton’s skills with his own to promote and improve the strength of their tour. At this point, he feels that being overwhelmed is part of the beast. Learning from every act he performs with and building his presence through lessons he began collecting with his friend and mentor, Seattle rapper Kublakai. The two met on tour, offering Dave the chance to mold his presence and image using the skills and motivation he learned from his friends and experiences. Objectivity in motivation and image are coming to define Dave’s outlook as he expands his voice.

“I see so many rappers trying to be something they are not; I strive to be honest instead of chasing that easily copied style. If rap stays on the same topics, we’ll never be rid of the materialism and misogyny that permeates the culture. So many people push this image on themselves and their music when in reality, no one is that one sided. The more people strive to be themselves through the music, the more it will grow.”

This idea is what drives Dave into his next progression, raising his sophistication to match the artists he finds sharing his mission and cutting out the nonsense that would hem him into a reputation as a stereotypical rapper.  The next beat, rhyme, show and tour are all staged to define him as an artists defined by his catalogue while he balances rhyme and narrative, success and art, image and integrity.

Dave will be performing at the Avalaunch Pray for Snow Party at Outdoor Retailer in Salt Lake City on January 24th at Club Elevate and The Chamberlin Rail Jam on March 2nd in Big Sky, MT.
